FAMILY: Poaceae (grass family)

NATIVE RANGE: Nearly throughout Florida

LIFESPAN: Perennial

BLOOM SEASON: Spring through fall

GROWTH HABIT: 1–3'+ tall and equally wide

PROPAGATION: Division of bunches, seed. Germinate in winter or spring. Keep soil surface moist for several weeks.

PLANTING: Tubeling plugs and 1-gallon containers are available. Space 18 to 24 inches apart.

CARE: New leaf growth can be stimulated by cutting back old or dead foliage.

SITE CONDITIONS: Full sun to partial shade; very dry to moist, well-drained sandy soils

HARDINESS: Zones 8A–10B

GARDEN TIPS: Wiregrass is tolerant of drought conditions and low-nutrient soils. It is best suited for naturalistic landscapes and uplands restoration projects; however, individual specimens can be easily incorporated into a home wildflower garden. The plant is fire dependent, meaning it requires regular exposure to fire to stimulate flower and seed production.
